Directions from on-campus location

From Commonwealth Avenue in the BU area, follow the map below to Saint Mary's Street. Saint Mary's street is located directly across from a plaza, with a bird sculpture, between two large distinctive Boston University buidings. On the corner of Saint Mary's Street is Radio Shack. Proceed away from Commonwealth Avenue on Saint Mary's Street. The Photonics Center is located at 8 Saint Mary's Street, on your left. From the Saint Mary's Street lobby proceed down the right hand hallway, and turn left into the elevator bank. Take an elevator to the 4th floor.

Directions from within the city (Local directions)

By Car

From the Kenmore Square Exit of Storrow Drive:

  • At the first set of traffic lights, turn right onto Beacon Street.
  • At this point, the road forks; take the left fork into Kenmore Square.
  • Bear right at the far end of Kenmore Square onto Commonwealth Avenue.
  • The Boston University campus extends along both sides of Commonwealth Avenue. Please follow the Parking Directions below.

From MIT/Kendall Square area:

  • Take Memorial Drive outbound (west).
  • After Hyatt Regency Hotel (Stepped structure on right) and Vassar Street, bear right onto off-ramp for Cambridgeport/Boston and Routes 2 and 3; you will enter a rotary.
  • Take third exit off rotary for Routes 2 and 3 and Boston; this exit takes you across the BU bridge over the Charles River.
  • The far end of the bridge is Commonwealth Avenue: you cannot take a left turn here!
  • Cross Commonwealth Avenue, staying to the left.
  • Bear left again before the light, looping back toward Commonwealth Avenue.
  • Get in the right lane, and take a right turn at the light onto Commonwealth Avenue.
  • The Boston University campus extends along both sides of Commonwealth Avenue. Please follow the Parking Directions below.

From the Harvard Square area:

  • Take Memorial Drive inbound (east).
  • Pass the Western Avenue and River Street bridges.
  • After passing Strawberry's, the Microcenter, and the Shell service station with the big neon sign on your left, bear right onto off-ramp for Cambridgeport/Boston and Routes 2 and 3; you will enter a rotary.
  • Take first exit off rotary for Routes 2 and 3 and Boston; this exit takes you across the BU bridge over the Charles River.
  • The far end of the bridge is Commonwealth Avenue: you cannot take a left turn here.
  • Cross Commonwealth Avenue, staying to the left.
  • Bear left again before the light, looping back toward Commonwealth Avenue.
  • Get in the right lane, and take a right turn at the light onto Commonwealth Avenue.
  • The Boston University campus extends along both sides of Commonwealth Avenue. Please follow the Parking Directions below.

By Public Transportation

Train/Trolley:

  • Get to the Green Line. This can be accomplished by taking the Red Line to Park Street, the Blue Line to Government Center, or the Orange Line to Downtown Crossing followed by the underground walkway to Park Street. See the MBTA website for current fare and other public transportation information.
  • Take the 'B' trolley for Boston College/Commonwealth Avenue. Note that this train starts at Government Center, so if boarding the Green Line at Lechmere, Science Park, North Station, or Haymarket you will need to take a trolley first to Government Center or Park Street and then switch to the 'B' trolley there.
  • Get off of the Green Line 'B' trolley at the BU Central stop. This is the third stop after the trolley goes above ground. You are now at the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Saint Mary's Street.
  • The Boston University campus extends along both sides of Commonwealth Avenue. The MDSP Lab and associated faculty and graduate student offices are located on the fourth floor of the Photonics Center at 8 Saint Mary's Street, within sight of Commonwealth Avenue. The MDSP lab is located in Room 401. Proceed to 8 Saint Mary's Street using the on-campus directions to the lab above.

By the CT2 bus from Kendall Square/MIT:

  • The CT2 bus leaves from in front of the outbound side of the Kendall Square T station. Schedule, map, and fare information is available on the MBTA website.
  • This bus also passes the corner of Vassar Street and Massachusetts Avenue.
  • The bus crosses the Charles River at the BU Bridge and crosses Commonwealth Avenue immediately. Ring for a stop at any point on or just after crossing the bridge. Ringing is accomplished by pushing on the vertical strips located periodically along the walls of the bus or the horizontal strips located overhead running the length of the bus.
  • The driver will let you off on Mountfort Street. Cross the street and a bridge over the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90) to return to Commonwealth Avenue. Turn right onto Commonwealth Avenue. The next street corner is Saint Mary's Street.
  • The Boston University campus extends along both sides of Commonwealth Avenue. The MDSP Lab and associated faculty and graduate student offices are located on the fourth floor of the Photonics Center at 8 Saint Mary's Street, within sight of Commonwealth Avenue. The MDSP lab is located in Room 401. Proceed to 8 Saint Mary's Street using the on-campus directions to the lab above.
  • By the CT2 bus from Ruggles Station/Northeastern:
  • The CT2 bus leaves from the Ruggles T station on the Orange Line. Schedule, map, and fare information is available on the MBTA website.
  • The bus will pass the Fenway Green Line station; the next possible stop is at the BU Bridge. You will pass Beacon Street, travel down Mountfort Street, pass Saint Mary's Street and cross a bridge over the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90). Ring for a stop at any point on Mountfort Street or the bridge. Ringing is accomplished by pushing on the vertical strips located periodically along the walls of the bus or the horizontal strips located overhead running the length of the bus.
  • The bus will turn left onto Commonwealth Avenue and let you off near the BU bridge.
  • Turn right on exiting the bus and walk down Commonwealth Avenue; cross one street and turn right, crossing to the opposite side of Commonwealth Avenue. Turn left and continue down Commonwealth Avenue. The next street corner is Saint Mary's Street.
  • The Boston University campus extends along both sides of Commonwealth Avenue. The MDSP Lab and associated faculty and graduate student offices are located on the fourth floor of the Photonics Center at 8 Saint Mary's Street, within sight of Commonwealth Avenue. By the 47 bus from Central Square:

  • The 47 bus leaves from the corner of Green Street and River Street, one block from the Central Square station on the Red Line. It can also be boarded at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Pearl Street, next to the Pearl street entrance to Central Square station's inbound side. Schedule, map, and fare information is available on the MBTA website.
  • The bus crosses the Charles River at the BU Bridge and crosses Commonwealth Avenue immediately. Ring for a stop at any point on or just after crossing the bridge. Ringing is accomplished by pushing on the vertical strips located periodically along the walls of the bus or the horizontal strips located overhead running the length of the bus.
  • The driver will let you off on Mountfort Street. Cross the street and a bridge over the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90) to return to Commonwealth Avenue. Turn right onto Commonwealth Avenue. The next street corner is Saint Mary's Street.
  • The Boston University campus extends along both sides of Commonwealth Avenue. By the 47 bus from Ruggles Station/Northeastern:

  • The 47 bus leaves from the Ruggles T station on the Orange Line. Schedule, map, and fare information is available on the MBTA website.
  • The bus will pass the Fenway Green Line station and Beacon Street, travel down Mountfort Street, pass Saint Mary's Street and cross a bridge over the Massachusetts Turnpike (Route 90). Ring for a stop at any point on the bridge.   • The bus will turn left onto Commonwealth Avenue and let you off near the BU bridge.
  • Turn right on exiting the bus and walk down Commonwealth Avenue; cross one street and turn right, crossing to the opposite side of Commonwealth Avenue. Turn left and continue down Commonwealth Avenue. The next street corner is Saint Mary's Street.

Parking Directions

 If you would like to arrange for free visitor's parking, you must call in advance. Otherwise, you may either park at the same garage as visitor's parking and pay the going parking garage rates, or you may attempt to park at a parking meter.

Visitors Parking:

From Kenmore Square

  • Make a U-turn on Commonwealth Avenue at Saint Mary's Street; not only is this maneuver legal, it's safe because this intersection has a protected left turn.
  • Pass light at Cummington Street.
  • The entire next block is Warren Towers; this is where the Parking Garage is located.
  • Take your next right onto Hinsdale Street, and immediately right again into the Warren Towers parking garage.
  • Give your name to the guard; the guard will check your name off the authorized visitor's list.
  • Park. Find your way out to Commonwealth Avenue and proceed to 8 Saint Mary's Street using the on-campus directions to the lab above.
  • From Cambridge Points
    • After taking the right onto Commonwealth Avenue, you will pass the Guitar Center, CVS, Radio Shack and a light at Saint Mary's Street.
    • Pass light at Cummington Street.
    • The entire next block is Warren Towers; this is where the Parking Garage is located.
    • Take your next right onto Hinsdale Street, and immediately right again into the Warren Towers parking garage.
    • Give your name to the guard; the guard will check your name off the authorized visitor's list.
    • Park. Find your way out to Commonwealth Avenue and proceed to 8 Saint Mary's Street using the on-campus directions to the lab above.

    Metered Parking:

    • Four-hour meters are located on Commonwealth Avenue, Hinsdale Street, and Cummington Street near Boston University buildings for 25˘? per half-hour.
    • Three-hour meters are located in Brookline along Saint Mary's Street for 25˘ per hour, and some free on-street parking is available in Brookline for periods of two-hours or less.(Brookline corresponds to anything South of Commonwealth Avenue and Cummington Street. Commonwealth Avenue runs approximately East-West.
    • Be warned: finding parking near Boston University is difficult, at best, so budget at least half an hour just to park.
    • After parking, find your way out to Commonwealth Avenue and proceed to 8 Saint Mary's Street using the on-campus directions to the lab above.

    Directions from outside the city

    • From the South or West
    • Take the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) East to Exit 18, Brighton/Cambridge. Exit left. Follow signs to Cambridge to the second set of lights. Turn right at the lights; this is Soldiers Field Road/Storrow Drive. Exit Storrow Drive at the Kenmore exit. Follow local directions for Kenmore Square.

    • From the Southeast
    • Take I-93 Route 3 (Southeast Expressway) North to Boston. Exit onto Storrow Drive (Exit 26). Continue on Storrow Drive to the Kenmore exit. Follow local directions for Kenmore Square.

    • From the North
    • Take I-93 or Route 1 South to Boston. Exit onto Storrow Drive (Exit 26). Continue on Storrow Drive to the Kenmore exit. Follow local directions for Kenmore Square.

    • From the North Shore or Logan Airport
    • Take Route 1-A through the Sumner Tunnel. Follow signs onto the Expressway North. Take the Back Bay/Storrow Drive exit (Exit 26), and follow signs onto Storrow Drive. Continue on Storrow Drive to the Kenmore exit. Follow local directions for Kenmore Square.
